About Dave The Dude

Knowing harmony is constancy.
Knowing constancy is enlightenment.
It is not wise to rush about.
Trying to control the breath causes strain.
If too much energy is used, exhaustion follows.
This is not the way of Tao.
Whatever is contrary to Tao will not last long.

Though Taoism can’t be adequately distilled by definition, if your life depended on it, and you were forced to select one word to describe what Tao is, you could probably go with “vital”—and in both senses of the word. That is to say, not only “full of life,” but also “that which is essential".

Taoism, often called "The Path" or "The Watercourse Way," is an ancient Chinese philosophy rooted in the teachings of Laozi. Central to Taoism is the concept of wu-wei, which means "non-action" or "effortless action," encouraging individuals to align with the natural flow of the universe, much like how water naturally finds its path. The Tao, akin to "the Force" from Star Wars, is an invisible, all-pervading force that connects and sustains all life. Laozi emphasized three treasures—compassion, frugality, and humility—as guiding principles for a life in harmony with the Tao. By embracing simplicity and letting go of ego, one can flow with the currents of life, finding peace and balance in the process.

Dudeism is a modern, laid-back philosophy inspired by the character of "The Dude" from The Big Lebowski. It serves as an accessible pop culture gateway to ancient Taoist principles. Like Taoism, Dudeism encourages going with the flow, embracing simplicity, and practicing wu-wei—living life without unnecessary stress or striving. By embodying a relaxed, easygoing attitude, Dudeism echoes the Taoist ideal of harmony with the natural world, suggesting that sometimes, the best way to live is simply to "abide." It's a lighthearted yet profound reminder that wisdom can be found in the most unexpected places, even in a bathrobe and sandals.

Abide. And Take It Easy, Mankind.

I hold a BA in History from the University of Ottawa.  I studied religion and philosophy at Windsor University as a very young man.  I am an ordained “Dudeist” priest with a doctorate in Philosophy from Abide University.  I am a practicing Taoist but I am a fan of most mystical religious traditions, from Judaism to Buddhism to Discordianism.  I am a fan of Carl Jung with an amateur interest in human psychology.  I am also fairly well studied in metaphysics and can converse somewhat knowledgeably about a variety of esoteric topics.

If you're struggling with a problem, I'd like to talk to you about it.  Contact me by phone at 613-296-5307 or email davethedude48@gmail.com to set up a free consultation.  Donations gladly accepted for services rendered.

Buy my books

I have been self-publishing books using the website LuLu. These are gorgeous paperbacks with durable binding. Available for sale right now is a novel rendition of the Tao Te Ching, a classic work of Chinese philosophy, fully annotated, with accompanying essays on Lao Tzu's '3 treasures'. I also am offering the book 'Mind and Tao' which aims to deconstruct modern malaise and materialist secular paradigms dominant in modern culture. Is this all a dream? I think so. Read this book and think about it for yourself.
